The reason that I selected The Killer Angels as my novel is because it is about the Battle of Gettysburg, and I am a big Civil War buff. Some information that was useful to know about the book was any information about the actual battle, or the war in general. Before the novel begins, the Civil War has been raging for two years. The rebel General Robert E. Lee has invaded southern PA and the newly appointed General Meade is bringing the Union Army in pursuit of the Confederates, and Lee turns his army to meet the federals in the region around Gettysburg. As the story begins, General Longstreet's spy is watching the Union Army advance after the rebels, and reports back to Longstreet, which alerts the rebels and causes them to turn back to face the enemy. The narrator passes through several important characters, but mainly stays with Confederate Generals Lee and Longstreet, and Union colonel Chamberlain. The setting of the novel is the town of Gettysburg and the area aroud the town. This is very important to the story because the battle actually took place and the story itself is based on the actual events of that battle, so the setting must be correct. The first main problem faced by a main character is when colonel Chamberlain is told to gaurd a company of soldiers who tried to desert the Union Army, when he has too few soldiers to effectively gaurd them. He is told that he can shoot them if they don't comply, although deep down he knows he can't because they are all from Maine as are the colonel and all of his men, so he knows if he shoots them he will never be able to go home because of the shame. The reason that I find this novel to be a page turner is that the author puts action and a plot twist on almost every page.
